WHAT’S WRONG WITH COACHES?
This week I was invited to a networking event. It sounded promising, until I was told: “Sorry, we don’t allow coaches.”
Let’s pause on that.
I am a coach, yes. But I’m also a Business and Life Strategist, an educator certifying life coaches globally, the owner of a social media agency, a property investor, and the co-founder of Clarity for Men CIC. Yet because of one word “coach” I was excluded from the room.
This is exactly why so many people hesitate to step into this industry. The stereotypes. The dismissive assumptions. The tired “not another coach” eye-rolls.
But here’s the reality; coaching is not only credible, it is one of the most valuable and impactful industries you could ever choose to enter.
Yes, the industry is crowded. And yes, some people do set themselves up as coaches without the right skills or credentials. That has damaged perception in some circles. But to paint all coaches with the same brush is to miss the bigger picture entirely. The truth is, when done properly, coaching is not about quick fixes or motivational one-liners. It is about frameworks, evidence-based practice, and results that change lives.
Coaches are often entrepreneurs, educators, strategists, and leaders. We are trained to listen at depth, to ask the kind of questions that shift perspectives, and to see patterns others miss. These are not “soft skills.” They are business - critical skills. They build stronger conversations, sharper thinking, and better outcomes.
And this is exactly why, if you have ever considered stepping into coaching, you shouldn’t let old stereotypes hold you back. Coaching is one of the fastest-growing industries in the world. It offers freedom, impact, and the ability to create a ripple effect that stretches far beyond a single client. Families, teams, and whole communities are influenced by the work great coaches do.
When events shut coaches out, they don’t just miss people like me, a strategist, educator, and multi-business owner, they shut the door on innovation, perspective, and connection. That’s the real loss. And it highlights something important; this industry needs more people who are serious about raising standards.
I wear the “coach” label proudly. But it is not the only role I play and it doesn’t have to be the only role you play either. If you have been waiting for a sign to step into coaching, this is it. Do it properly. Get accredited. Build a career that is credible, sustainable, and rewarding.
